One day i was at Victoria Hotel waiting for the bus to come pick us up to go to the world dj championships at Brixton academy. I seated on a free seat, and a guy seat by my side and started talking me. He was a nice guy, and i had a great time talking with him. Some hours later that guy was the best dj in the world. Tigerstyle is one of the turntablists with a futurist vision, who introduced some electronic music into his turntablist set. Maybe now you can apply to be the 4th Eurostarz member! Who knows ;) Un dia estaba en el Hotel Victoria esperando a que el autobus viniera a por nosotros y nos llevase al campeonato del mundo de dj en Brixton Academy. Me sente en un asiento vacio y un tipo se sentó a mi lado y comenzó a hablarme. Era un tipo muy simpático y tuve un camino agradable. Pocas horas después, ese tipo era el mejor dj del mundo. Tigerstyle es uno de los turntablistas con una vision futurista, que empezó a poner algo de elctrónica en los sets de turntablism. Quizás puedas enviar una petición para ser el cuarto miembro de Eurostarz... quien sabe!!
1) When did you start djiing?
I first started by watching lots of scratching videos and practising on my friends’ turntables. But I finally saved up some cash from a whole summer of working my ass off, and bought my first set-up in 1998.
Empecé viendo un montón de videos de scratch y practicando en los platos de amigos mios. Finalmente ahorré dinero de un verano entero partiendome el culo trabajando, y compré mi primer equipo en 1998. 2) What are your music roots?
My musical roots are pretty much staright from hip hop. I have a lot of musical influences though, e.g. when I was a kid I was listening to classic 80’s pop music! Then in my early teens I was listening to rock and grunge, in my late teen years I grew to really get into hop hop and drum & bass. All this was inspiring for battle routines and production also. But for the passed few years I’ve been really influenced by jazz and electronic music.
Mis raices musicales vienen del hip hop. Sin embargo tengo muchas raices, cuando era niño escuchaba mucho pop clásico de los 80s, en mi adolescencia escuchaba rock y grunge y en mi adolescencia mas tardia entré en el hip hop y el drum n bass. Esto me inspiró para rutinas de batalla y para producir también. Pero unos años después he estado muy influenciado por el jazz y la electrónica.
3) Why did you started to be a turntablist dj?
I wanted to be a turntablist ever since I saw the DMC and ITF videos back in the mid/late 90’s (I think turntablism was at it’s best then). I really liked the idea of battling and the live sounds produced from just scratching and juggling. It was all very new to me and I found this really exciting... I’ve been addicted ever since! Yo siempre quise ser turntablist desde que vi videos de DMC e ITF a mediados de los 90s (creo que es cuando el turntablist estaba en su mejor momento). Me gustaba la idea del battling en vivo y los sonidos derivados de scratch y beat juggling. Todo era muy nuevo para mi y lo encontré realmente apasionante, he sido adicto desde entonces!
4) I remember your first world crown, it was maybe one of the strongest championships ever, in supremacy 2003... ie.merge, M Rock, Pfel and many other great djs were strongly prepared for that year, and you won everybody with incredible skills for 2003! How did you feel with your first world title? It must be an incredible sensation...
Yeah that was a great feeling to win something major. It was such a tough competition, everybody was dope in that battle, which made me feel a little nervous. I had the hardest time battling Pfel in the semi-final, I was pretty sure I was out then, so it was lucky I even made it to the final!
Si, fue algo increible ganar un título mundial. Fue una competición muy dura, todo el mundo fue increible en esta competición, lo que me hizo sentir un poco nervioso. Tuve mi batalla más dura contra Pfel en semifinales, pensaba que él me habia eliminado, pero fui afortunado y pasé a la final. 5) Will you return to competition any day?
I don’t think I have the dedication for competition anymore... Sometimes it’s tempting to come back, but I’m more interested in pushing things further with my production, the live band project. It’s less stressful. Competitions are good for putting your name out and introducing yourself.
No creo que le vuelva a dar tanta dedicación para competir... a veces estoy tentado de volver, pero estoy más interesado en ir más lejos produciendo con mi live band. Es menos estresante. Las competiciones están bien para darte a conocer. 6) What are your music projects these days?
At the moment I’m re-scoring the music for an old classic movie called Mother India (with my band also). Also I’m creating a new showcase and also some new live band material, which should e ready by the end of the year. My album is finally complete so now I need a label to put it out (more delays...!). All this is taking up a lot of my time at the moment.
Ahora estoy recopilando musica para una pelicula antigua llamado Madre India, con mi banda también. Estoy creando un nuevo showcase y nuevas cosas con mi banda, que deberia estar listo a finales de año. Mi album está acabado finalmente i necesito un sello que lo saque al mercado (más retrasos!), todo estó ocuma mi tiempo ahora. 7) How is a normal day in tigerstyles life?
A normal day in my life? Hmmm... it’s tricky as it’s always changing, but I suppose my usual day is to get my ass out of bed, grab a coffee and get straight to my studio and to spend the day completing the projects I mentioned... Probably spend a lot of time at the PC, then I practise on the turntables and then back to my PC! Not that exciting eh?! Un dia normal en mi vida... emmm es engañoso porque siempre cambia, pero supongo que levanto el culo de la cama, cojo un café, voy a mi estudio y gasto el dia con los proyectos que he mencionado, probablemente gasto mucho tiempo en el pc. Practico con los platos y vuelvo al pc. Nada excitante eh??
8) What’s your favourite turntablist technique?
I’m still a big fan of beat juggling; I find it more satisfying to see a good beat juggle than a good scratch technique (I think it requires a little more thought and effort). But for scratching, my favourite is still the ‘transformer’ scratch. You can do anything with transforming. Soy todavia un gran fan del beatjuggling, encuentro más satisfactorio ver un buen beatjuggling que una buena tecnica de scratch (creo que requiere mayor preparación y esfuerzo). En el scratching mi favorito sigue siendo el transformer. Puedes hacer lo que quieras con transformer. 9) What’s your favourite dj equipment? Do you think Technics Sl is still the best turntable on the market?
I’m using Vestax PDX at the moment. I think these are the most innovative turntables on the market. Technics are still great turntables but I get more out of Vestax as the motor is more powerful, has a straight tone-arm which makes the needle skip less, + & - 50% pitch control and also you can change the cables easily... Damn I sound just like an advert!
Uso Vestax PDX en este momento. Creo que son los mejores platos del mercado. Technics son buenos pero mejor Vestax ya que el motor es más potente, tiene brazo recto que hace que salte menos y su 50% de pitch, puedes cambiar los cables facilmente... joder suena como publicidad! 10) You’ve been some times in Spain. I remember 2005, you did a really futuristic showcase making turntablism more musical... whats the future of turntablism?
The future of turntablism is to take it as far as ‘you’ want to. Like any art, everybody has their own ideas, goals, plans etc... With me, I want to push it as far as possible. I get influenced by lots of things which I incorporate into my set. I basically like to do as much stuff as possible, without making it messy of course. Some turntablists will incorporate scratching into their club sets, or make something nice and mellow. You can make anything dope with turntablism if you take it far into the direction you want.
El futuro del turntablism es llevarlo tan lejos como quieras. Como cualquier arte, todo el mundo tiene sus propias ideas, objetivos... los mios son llevarlo todo lo lejos posible. He tenido muchas influencias que he incorporado a mis sets. basicamente intento hacer todo lo posible, sin jorobarlo claro. Algunos turntablistas incorporarán scratch en sus sesiones de club, o harán algo bueno y suave. Puedes hacer grandes cosas con el turntablism si lo llevas lejos en la dirección que más te guste. 11) People listen massively techno, electroclash, raggaeton, drum n bass, soulful, tech step... why turntablism is so underground? After all, when a turntablist makes a showcase in any electronic music festival is commonly the most applaused...
Yes that’s true, If you do a crazy electronic set in a full club who want to go nuts, you will get a great reaction for sure. Turntablism is still quite underground because it’s still being discovered and also still developing. To have a good knowledge of scratching, you must follow it from the beginning because there is so much to take in, e.g. seeing different styles, scratching/beat juggling and battling, scratch music, keeping up to date with the latest DJs and techniques. It’s a very intricate market. Si, eso es verdad. Si haces un set electrónico en un club lleno con gente loca, tendrás una gran reacción seguro. El turntablism es underground porque todavia no se ha desarrollado por completo. Para tener un buen conocimiento del scratch, necesitas seguirlo desde el principio porque hay mucho donde beber, diferentes estilos, scratch, juggling, batallas, musica a base de scratch, actualizarte con los nuevos djs y tecnicas... un mercado muy complejo.
Well it seems that the winner will get exposure after the competition, and also gets taken on the ‘heats’ tour the next year. But really it should be down to the DJs to take care of themselves as they only know which direction they want to go in. Competitions like DMC, ITF/IDA, Vestax etc... only provide a platform for the DJ to expose themselves. After that, it should be up to you. Think of it like receiving your black belt in martial arts, it’s only a step forward to show that you’re capable of kicking ass! Then you can go on to teach, do exhibitions, feature in films etc... Parece que el ganador tiene mucha visibilidad después de la competición, y también es llevado a las actuaciones del año siguiente, pero es un trabajo que deben hacer los propios djs, cuidandose ellos mismos y llevando su carrera en la direccion que lo quieran llevar. Competiciones como DMC, ITF, Vestax... solo son una plataforma de lanzamiento. Después de eso es cosa tuya. Es como recibir el cinturón negro en artes marciales. Es solo un paso adelante demostrando que eres capaz de patear culos! Luego puedes dar clases, exhibiciones, aparecer en peliculas...
13) I heard about some european dj team, with you and some of the biggest turntablist names... it was just a rumour?
That’s true, with Rafik and Pfel. We just became good buddies after battling each other in 2003 and I was talking to Rafik (both drunk as hell!) and we decided to practise some stuff together, then we were talking with Pfel and he was just as enthusiastic so with called ourselves EuroStarz and did a few shows together. However, we all became very busy with our own projects so we have put the idea on hold for now... But I don’t think we’re finished yet! ;)
Es verdad, con Rafik y Pfel. Nos volvimos amigos después de competir en 2003 y también hablé con Rafik (estabamos bebidos hasta el culo) y decidimos practicar cosas juntos, Pfel estaba entusiasmado con la idea y decidimos llamarnos Eurostarz e hicimos algunos shows juntos. Sin embargo todos estuvimos ocupados con nuestros propios proyectos y lo dejamos de momento. Pero no creo que hayamos acabado todavia!!
