When my pupils at dj schools ask me for the best djs in history, i always say: there are lot of champions, great djs, who makes incredible skill routines. But there are 4, 5 or 6 djs in history who simply are genious. They dont only make routines or great scratching, they create, they see what we will start to understand in the next few years. Thats Rafik....

Cuando mis alumnos dj me preguntan por los mejores djs de la historia siempre les digo: hay muchos campeones, djs increibles, que hacen rutinas complicadísimas con un nivel increible. Pero hay 4, 5 o 6 djs a lo largo de la historia que son sencillamente genios. Ellos no solo hacen rutinas o un scratch de gran nivel, ellos crean, ellos ven lo que nosotros empezaremos a ver después de varios años... Así es Rafik...

1) Why do you decided to be a dj turntablist? Trance djs earn more money and get more horny disco fan girls...

That is very true in a way. I guess the problem was that I was always more interested in scratching rather than trance! I should pity myself for the bad choices I make! But I also feel very rich by being able to live my life, plus i can make a living. I will never need more, but if you want to send me even more cash and horny disco girls – no problem buddy! I feel like bagels btw.

Eso es muy cierto. Creo que el problema es que siempre me ha gustado más el scratch que el trance. Deberia sentir pena por la mala elección que hice! Pero también es enriquecedor ser capaz de vivir mi vida y hacer la mia propia. Ya no necesitaré mas, pero si aun asi me quieres mandar pasta y chicas cachondas, no hay problema!

2) What are your music roots?

My „roots“ are very classic. Both my parents were musicians back then. I played cello, piano and I beat quite a few drums in my life. Drums were important. I was six years old and listening to stuff like Guns n Roses/Metallica etc. When my folks put me on the drums, I could be my heroes in my fantasy, rather than that cute boy playing mozart. That’s how they created a passionate musician. I love music, rap to electronic, soul to funk to jazz, I love glitchy stuff, I like hard stuff/soft stuff. Really it depends, but I need true music loaded with emotion and soul.

Mis raices son muy clasicas. Mis padres eran músicos. Toqué el Cello, el piano y algo de percusión, esto fue muy importante. A los 6 años escuchaba cosas como Guns n Roses, Metallica etc. Cuando me puse a tocar percusión, me sentia como mis héroes en una fantasía, más que un niño tocando mozart. Así es como crearon un músico apasionado. Me gusta la música, desde el rap a la electrónica, soul, funk, jazz... me gusta el glitch, lo suave y lo fuerte. Depende, pero necesito que sea música cargada con emoción y alma.

3) What is your favourite dj equipment? im surprised you compited with Rane TTM56 and Ortofon Qbert in 2006. Qberts are the most skipping needles of all ortofon series. Finally in 2007 you went back to the classics with a 07...

Here’s the deal: I use things because they match my purpose. The Rane mixer – truth to be told, It was my friend Dj Clear’s mixer.The Rane is a good mixer, but it also gave me some problems in volume. That 07 i used in 07 has a rather emotional value – it was my first battle mixer. I used it in my first and last battle, i won the first and last battle with it. It is my baby, hat’s just it. I just like good equipment and i work closely with brands that have good products. Like Ortofon have the perfect cartridge for everyone and I can say I also had flawless shows with the Q-Bert needle. One thing I love is Traktor Scratch Pro though, that is one serious weapon.

Así lo hago: uso las cosas que me lleven a una meta. La Rane era de mi amigo Dj Clear. Es una buena mesa, pero me dió problemas con el volumen. La 07 tenía un valor sentimental, fue mi primera mesa de battle. La usé en mi primera y última competición. Gané la primera y la última batalla con ella. Es mi niña. Me gusta el buen equipamiento y trabajo cerca con marcas buenas. Ortofón tiene la aguja perfecta para cada dj y sobre la Qbert puedo decir que también he tenido actuaciones perfectas con ellas.

4) Have you tried Rodec Scratchbox? (you must give it a try if you dont yet)

I tried it once. It is good! Mixers for me are less important than turntables tho. If it comes to equipment, the thing I am waiting for is my Vestax controller one!

Si, la probé una vez, es buena! Las mesas para mi son menos importantes que los platos sin embargo. Sobre equipamiento, lo que estoy esperando es mi vestax controller one!

5) what is your favorite set? Personally i love your DMC 2004 and ITF 2005 (your strongest year IMO)

My favourite routines are DMC 2006 & 2007. Simply because that is the two routines with the music that i WANT to make. It is a production, executed live. It is my music. In my opinion stuff like battle records or singles were a limitation to somebody elses imagination. If youu produce routines with an eye for technicality and the old values, you keep doing your thing, but you make it entirely yours. 2007 was a great expreience because I was working with Le Jad. That man is incredible and we really linked our senses of music.

Mis rutinas favoritas son DMC 2006 y 2007. Simple, son las rutinas con la música con las que yo queria hacerlas. Es una producción ejecutada en vivo. Es mi música. En mi opinión, los discos de batalla y singles eran una limitación para la imaginación de alguien. Si te produces tus rutinas con un ojo para la tecnica y los viejos valores, estás manteniendo tu esencia, pero además lo haces enteramente tuyo. 2007 fue una gran experiencia por trabajar con Le Jad. Este hombre es increible y unimos nuestros sentidos de la música.

6) Are you gonna return to competition again?

No. I will follow the scene and get involved, but I have to say that battling and the idea of being „the best“ is not appealing to me anymore. That does not mean anything bad, but I am off to make music. I still love competition and everything it gave me I just don’t believe my future will be about competition. I am impressed by the history of Jazz for example – these cats were battling it out too! But I guess what happened after that.... was good! Now that we all know we got some balls, we should see what we can do with em rather than just competing for the best balls. I would like to make clear again, I love Battling and it is a part of me. I don’t think it’s silly/boring/wack/played out.

No, seguiré la escena y estaré envuelto, pero la idea de competir y ser el mejor no volverá para mí. No significa nada malo, pero quiero hacer música. Me gusta la competición y todo lo que me aportó, solo que no me veo compitiendo más. Ahora estoy de lleno en la historia del Jazz, estos batallaban tambien! Peró lo que ocurrió después fue bueno! Ahora que tenemos cosas, vamos a ver que podemos hacer con ello más que competir solamente. Quiero dejar claro de nuevo que me encanta competir y es parte de mi vida. No lo considero aburrido/estupido/feo...

7) What are you doing now? What are your projects nowadays? Are you a session dj too?

I am working on a blog that will be launched in the next week. It is about as well dj/music culture as well as „urban“ culture. It contains a lot of videos and articles, a tour diary and much more! Our scene doesn’t really have a medium anymore and I am trying to fill the gap. Come check it out! Besides that I am working on a lot of production and a rather futuristic approach to turntablism. I would like to shut my teeth until I am ready, shhhhhhhh! I learned to open my mouth when the time is right. But for the stuff that I did recently, go to my blog and find out!

Trabajo en un Blog que lanzo la semana que viene. Es sobre musica, cultura y rollo urbano. Contiene videos, articulos diarios y mucho mas! Nuestra escena no tiene muchos medios y trato de llenar esto. Venid a verlo!

8) What a dj have to do if he wants to kick your ass on a dmc?

Well if it’s my ass he wants to kick, i suggest this: Watch the 2006 and 2007 DMC. Now, go into the woods and fetch some of these wild mushrooms. Eat that shit on the spot. Now go straight to the airport, fly to the US and arrange a meeting with a guy called Dr. Emmett L. Brown. You will find him in a hut. He will sit you in this car that goes really really fast. Next thing you know you are on stage of the DMC finals 2006, just ready to go on stage before me. You laugh and pull off a straight clean nirvana routine. I look like an idiot. You win!

bueno, si es mi culo lo que hay que patear, sugiero esto: mirad la dmc 2006 y 2007. Ahora id al bosque y coged algunas de esas setas salvajes. Comeros esa mierda en el acto. Id derechos al aeropuerto, volad a los USA y concertad una cita con el DR Emmet Brown. Le encontrareis en una choza. El os sentará en ese coche que va tan realmente rápido. Lo siguiente que recuerdas es que estás en las finales del DMC en el escenario, justo antes que yo. Te ries y logras del tirón una rutina de nirvana. Parezco tonto. Tu ganas!

9) how many time did you practice for a world battle?

Well, first off I got better at battles when I started taking thm less seiously. But I have to admit, in 2006 and 2007 i practiced a lot.

Bueno, he de decir que tuve mejores batallas cuando me lo empecé a tomar menos en serio. Pero tengo que admitirlo, en 2006 y 2007 practiqué muchísimo.

10) What are your turntablist influences?

Definitly the golden age heroes. Q-Bert, D-Styles, Shortcut, Mixmaster Mike, Craze, A-Trak. I play with musicians for many years now, so I also liked people like Ricci etc a lot. I don’t agree on a lot of views, but the music is mad!

Los héroes de la edad dorada. Qbert, Dstyles, Shortkut, Mixmastermike, Craze, Atrack... ahora toco con músicos. Me gusta gente tipo Ricci un montón. No estoy de acuerdo en muchas cosas, pero la música es genial.

11) I asked Tigerstyles about Eurostarz... it seems turntablist teams were at its best at early 2000´s, but now there are no much dj teams...

maybe. I think there is less turntablists in general and i think i know why that happened. It is not because battling became „boring“. But if you have less people in a scene, it makes chances for multiple guys to meet and get together for a team pretty slim i guess. Back in 2000 we had a boom. Everybody had decks, etc. Now the media doesn’t cover it anymore, so nobody even know they could theoretically be interested in this thing we do. In Germany all the kids want to be a rapper now. Why? Because that’s what they see on tv and in magazines.

Es posible. Creo que hay menos turntablistas en general y creo que sé por qué ocurre. No es porque competir se haya vuelto aburrido, pero si hay menos gente en la escena, hay menos oportunidades para mucha gente de poder conocerse y hacer un grupo. En 2000s tuvimos un boom. Todo el mundo tenia platos, etc. Ahora la publicidad no cubre esto, asi que mucha gente que puede estar interesada en esto puede llegar a conocerlo. En Alemania todos los niños quieren ser raperos ahora. Por que? Porque es lo que ven en TV y en las revistas.

12) I enjoyed a lot your Workout essentials. We want more battle records from you...

haha. Shit man! I know I am a lazy ass dude. I am working on one with Jad and I need to finish my work!!! That will be a nice record though.

jaja, mierda tio! Se que soy un culo vago. Estoy trabajando en uno con Le Jad y tengo que finalizarlo! Va a ser un buen trabajo.

13) What about Lordz of fitness?

Lordz of Fitness still exists. But today, we are a loose collective rather thatn a real hardcore ttblism crew. We do play clubs together in tag teams. Me n Kid Fresh, Kid Fresh n Jbounce or Rsgunyado, things like that. We are still in touch and everybody is busy on their individual projects.

Lordz of fitness existe todavia. Pero somos más un colectivo que un grupo de turntablism en sentido estricto. A veces tocamos en clubs formando equipo en forma de relevos. Yo mismo, Kid Fresh, J Bounce o con Rasgunyado. Todos estamos en contacto y todos tenemos nuestros propios proyectos individuales.

14) Are you going to visit us in spain any day? You must come for some tapas and fiesta!

I just came to Bilbao to do BUM festival with Kid Koala and DJ Yulian, I really loved it! It was a pleasure to hang out there. You make great rum & coke in Spain and your people are very very comfortable to hang around with! I hope I come back soon.

Si, acabo de estar en Bilbao en el Bum Festival, con Kid Koala y Dj Yulian. Me encantó! Fue un placer estar por allí. Haceis buen Ron con Cocacola y estuve muy agusto con la gente de allí. Espero volver pronto de nuevo.
